Bird Control |
|
| |
| The Problem |
Much of the damage caused by birds
arises due to infestation on buildings, warehouses, grain
stores and in farm buildings. The problem usually occurs when
there is surplus stored grain or another food source which
the birds can get access to. Suitable nesting sites will also
encourage birds to an area. Apart from their presence being
a nuisance, fouling is not only unsightly but also corrosive
to buildings and structures. Some birds (feral pigeon in particular)
are also known to carry disease. |
| |
|
Species that can be controlled under
the general licence are: |
|
| Feral and Wood
Pigeon |
| Black-backed, Lesser
Black-backed and Herring Gull |
| Carrion/Hooded
Crow, Rook, Jackdaw, Magpie, Jay |
| Starling, Sparrow
(only a problem
when entering premises) |
|
| |
| The Solution |
Birds can be controlled in a variety
of different methods (eradication, proofing and scaring) but
this depends on species and also their environment. |
| |
|
Eradication
methods are: shooting and trapping
|
|
| |
|
| Proofing
is a very effective way to keep birds
from entering or fouling. This is either done by netting areas
where birds are gaining access or using a point system or a
wire to stop them perching or roosting on ledges or beams. |
|
| |
|
| Scaring
devices can be effective on cropland
or landfill sites. These devises are not used in public areas
due to noise pollution. |
